I ended up giving up on this one... I read about half of it. It basically is a collection of various characters whose lives are drastically changed by the war. Depressing with a side of depression, and not alll that much. It was readable, it just got old and depressing, harder to want to pick it up.

** spoiler alert ** Better than the first round, though still a three-star book for me. Eisler is a master of creating a sense of place, but certain elements that seem to be promised just do not materialize by the end of the book. Part of this seems to be a problem with the construction of the main character in the form of a "realistic" assassin. The big smash up fight hinted by the underground no-rules fight early in the book does not happen. Rain as a long-lived assassin would not try to put himself into a position for the Hollywood-style ending you expect. Instead, he starts the fight against a "hard target" with a cheap shot to the ankle; the fight is still rough, but is designed to have him survive with minimal injuries. The bureaucratic/political intrigue part of the plot is really only carried through in conversation because Rain does not play as active of a role in this part of the story. This leaves this part of the plot to feel a lot less vibrant. The "relationship" section of the story improves from the first book, but is still overblown. So, it still in the mens-formula-fiction realm for me. This isn't a bad thing, but I'll definitely remember more about the tone of the novel and the location of the story than the story itself. It's a good little vacation through a small part of Japan...with death and a little sex along the way.

Bunun üçüncü okumamızı yüksek sesle bitirdim. Beverly Cleary bir rüya gibi yüksek sesle okur. Gösterişsiz yeteneğine olan saygım artmaya devam ediyor. Ayrıca yetmişli ebeveynlik bir tür zaman kapsülü olarak hizmet eder.
