Okay, here's my review (clearing throat): I think this book was beautifully written and the characters were excellently developed. I really like Richard Yates' writing style and the way he draws the reader into the plot and the setting, painting such visual images that its hard to not see yourself like a fly on the wall with all that is going on. However, this book is also terribly depressing. If you want a book about love, romance, and happiness than do not pick up this book. The cover might call you, but its terribly deceiving. Instead, this book glorifies what happens to young couples who do not live out their dreams before deciding to give them up to matrimony and children. I definitely describe this book as a page turner and kept hoping that things would get better, but like reality I was always disappointed. Excellent job Mr. Yates but after looking at the description of your other books, all sounding equally as depressing, I think this might be the end of you and me. Oh and one more thing, whoever did the casting for the movie based on this book did an excellent job! bravo!
