Beautifully imagined and executed fantasy novel by a fellow Smithie! Influence of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and Punchdrunk's Sleep No More is apparent--but only if you're familiar with those two genius collectives. Engaging, mysterious, surprising--so many moments where I wondered "Where did she come up with that!?" such as the cloud climbing tent...the different magicians' tricks... and it did make me want to believe in the power of Tarot and visit a new york street psychic. I had to remind myself it was all fiction. If you've ever imagined running away to join the circus, this is probably the circus you'd want to join. It's suitable for young adults up until the last few chapters where there's a sex scene and cursing(!) but by that point they may as well finish the book. If you let your kids read The Hunger Games...this "battle" is nothin.
