I've read a few books on the Tudors and I love that era....but this, Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt, is where it all began! This is a true life fairytale. A story of scandalous love, war, murder, redemption....everything you need to make a 5 star epic novel. I didn't know much about Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt until reading this novel. Anya Seton does a beautiful job of telling their love story. She put a lot of research into this novel making it as true as she believed it to be. They are my favorite romantic couple of all time! It shows love does conquer all. For all the trials and tribulation they endured, they still end up together, their love never fading.

Another enjoyable book by Chabon, this noir whodunnit takes place in Sitka, Alaska, a fictional "temporary" community for displaced Jews established after WWII. The story follws Meyer Landsman, a down and out detective who finds himself working for his ex-wife and tracking down a hastily closed murder case that is a little too close to home. The dialogue is snappy and the descriptions are fresh. More meaty than The Final Solution, less weighty than Kavalier and Clay, this is an interesting departure for Chabon and an entertaining read throughout.
