Beverly Cleary was one of my favorite authors as a kid! I had to include these on the list!

I've never actually read any version of The Hound of the Baskervilles before this, though I've encountered it's descendants in any number of Holmesian supernatural pastiches and homages. Prior to picking up this volume, the closest I'd ever come to the actual story was the great Hammer adaptation with Peter Cushing, and how close that actually is is probably up for debate. Mostly, though, I didn't pick up this version to get closer to the story, either, I picked it up as a sampler of the art of I.N.J. Culbard, whose work I've recently been introduced to. It's pretty great here, deceptively simple and very nicely laid out. It's a very handsome volume, and about the only quibble I have is with the limited color palette, but for the most part everything looks really great, and the story is clearly told, at least, as near as I could tell. I've got some more books illustrated by Culbard headed my way, hopefully, and I'm looking forward to them.

So much fun! If you are fascinated by social history, have a curiosity for how our modern amenities developed, and enjoy tongue-in-cheek humor you'll love Bryson's latest book.
