At first, I found the story and characters really intriguing, but after a while, it seemed to drag and didn't hold my attention as well. It took me a long time to finish and I wasn't very satisfied at the end.
Book typifies Hank's philosophy of life: Writing, Drinking, and F-ing. In this particular book and era of his life, writing takes a backseat to the other two. Normally, writing and drinking are at the forefront, hand-in-hand.
This was a re-read of a book I've owned for years but haven't picked up in recent memory. I'd forgotten how much I like the character development of Putney's Fallen Angel series.
Lots of good life truths in this book. Being LDS some things weren't as WOW as they seemed to be to the author. Subjects like the importance of family and the idea of making your own world within the world are some examples of that. It was a touching book although a little depressing because you know that he is going to die at the end throughout the book. Still it was inspirational and thought provoking.
