I'm moving to Nexus to become Dain's unshuline
A book everyone should read. I should read it again.
HAYSLOPE CONFIDENTIAL by James Ellroy Adam Bede, carpenter. Stalwart, manly. A tornado of class hatred and sexual dementia brewing under a Puritan shell. Setting, pastoral. Napoleon making trouble overseas. Lady preacher making trouble in the village square. Dinah, smug. "All of you simple folk must resist your sinful natures at all times. The rich need not bother, however." Adam, impressed. Arthur Donnithorne. Charming, weak willed. Used to having indulgent cottagers feed him sweets as a boy. Now he's after a different kind of sweet. Hetty, carnal. "Bless you, squire. I don't know much about kissing, only whenever I look at you I want to do it over and over." Arthur, engorged. Pulsating. Kisses in the forest. Twilight passion. Sudden discovery. Adam, outraged. "Nay, then! You've touched her! So you've touched her, have you? You've touched her and you've kissed her. Why then, sir, you've ruined her with your touching and your kissing. Now I'm going to ruin you sir, with my own special kind of touching!" Fistfight, brutal. Figure Arthur beaten bloody, his pretty face all swollen and sore. Figure Adam smug, triumphant. Nothing resolved. Hetty, pregnant. Pitfully helpless, but inarticulate. Bad, bad, Hetty, how dare she look so pretty and enjoy kissing men so much? The conventions of the age force her to murder her baby. Just to prove sexy women are no good. Arthur, repentant. Dinah, smug. Adam, ready for the Chaste Good Girl. Cue sickening hymns. The End. "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful!" HETTY SORREL
Much sad.
This book made me want to be a writer.
Saw a copy in our bksale at the library and I heard it was good so I thought what the hell. It was just ok for me though, guess my heart wasn't in it. Took a while to get interesting, then it got all weird at the end. Don't know if I'll bother with the other 2 books or not. Maybe after I get some distance from this one.
