This book, though very well written, scholarly in scope, and personal in tone, is an overdrawn essay that would have been better as a lenghthy article in The Atlantic Monthly. The strength of the book is her elucidation of acedie as a combination of deadening beliefs and felt experiences that lead to a person shutting down hope, feeling, compassion, and purpose. She cites many examples of this in present day American culture as well as in her personal life. The weakness of the book is that it over criticizes modern psychiatry for being reductionist and next to useless in creating life change. It is too easy for people to seek medication and various forms of therapeutic treatment that avoid the issue of living beyond one's own narcissitic fulfillments.
