Second in my Jane Austen study. Ah, Austen's brilliant conversations are sheer delight! Several things about this novel stood out on this last reading. First, Austen has a prodigious talent for saying a lot in very few words. Her characterizations in Pride and Prejudice are subtle and brief, yet the reader understands immediately. Second, the relationships between Austen's heroines and their parents is never strong and the heroines appear to eclipse their parents. Mr. Bennet and Lizzy are portrayed as close, yet Lizzy is his better when it comes to civility, appropriate behavior, and interest in the wider world. Third, the romantic suspense in Pride and Prejudice is superbly plotted. I am so familiar with this story, yet I still found myself pulled along by the events in the second half in the novel. I couldn't put it down. 2016 reread: Never disappoints!
