This is my favorite King book. Hands down. It's a very long, very good book, about how rotten and greedy people can be. A man comes to a small town, and says he can give anyone anything they want, as long as they do a favor for him. This causes the town to turn against each other. I won't say anymore, except that it's a wonderful book, and all I can do is recommend it.
I struggled with this book. On the one hand I just can't relate to people who are as self indulgent and obviously flawed as the parents in this book. On the other hand their story is told in such a way that while the flaws and heartache are evident, the love and affection felt by each person shines through. Still I wonder why this book was written. Not a pleasant story.
This was the first David Sedaris book I read. And I wanted more after reading it! So funny you are, David Sedaris. And you sister is funny too!
** spoiler alert ** James being one of my favorite authors, I must be circumspect about how I rhapsodize about this work. Let me just say that the current crop of vampire enthusiasts could learn a lot about subtlety and horror for The Master. To say more would give away more than I have already done, but I can say that this is an intricately crafted book that rewards the reader's patience in following its intricate twists and turns. The main character runs for his life and sanity in the end as would we in his place.
Thrilling.
i loved this book even more when i watched the promotional dvd bechdel's publisher put out with it and saw that she poses herself in photographs of every character in every frame before she draws them. i have an affinity for the obsessive compulsive.
