I loved that this was a personal narrative of Ondaatje, and the life he lived while growing up in Sri Lanka. It is also very interesting to see the personal side of the political struggles that took place during the war there. He writes with humor and insight here.
I met Cecil again tonight at book signing thingy. It was cool because I met her the first time under weird conditions... Last year I was eavesdropping on this girl behind me while waiting for a play to start in L.A. At the moment I realized who she was I turned around in surprise. She, of course, wondered why this weird person was looking at her, so I had to say: "Aren't you an author? You wrote Boy Proof, right?" and she was pretty blown away that I knew that. Unfortunately, she had been saying some pretty personal stuff to friend she was with, and it was now obvious that I had been listening to everything. I apologized profusely for listening in, and she was so cool about it. I reminded her tonight about how we met... and I can safely say that she hasn't forgotten! :D Beige is a great, great book. Fun from beginning to end.
