I preferred "White Apples" and "The Wooden Sea," but you certainly can't accuse a Jonathan Carroll novel (even this early one) of being dull.
I would recommend this is you will be traveling to Corsica, as it gives a great flavor of traditional Corsican culture, but otherwise, I don't recommend picking it up. It's a pretty standard 19th century romantic novel, with unsympathetic characters and a fairly lame plot until about the last 50 pages, which do pick up and move quickly. Colomba, the title character, is intriguing - she seems like the original mafia sister/wife.
