I wanted to read this and see the film for a while now but put it off because Alex warned me it would be pretty dark. (The last time he gave me that warning it was for American Psycho and he was right, and I hated it.) But this wasn't nearly as dark as that! I kind of both enjoyed and was irritated by the narrator's backpacker smugness as I recognised from my own travels. Particularly those backpackers you meet that are so determined to get off the beaten path that they think you're doing it wrong unless you're covered in bedbugs and paying only a dollar or two for each night's accommodation. Which I guess is the point of this book - a parody of that attitude taken to its extreme.
