I loved this version of Cinderella! It kept me guessing--I thought it might be a re-telling of Beauty and the Beast. Stanley is so skillful at weaving a story as rich as a tapestry. The characters are fully realized (and we get to hear the tale told from several points of view)and I really cared about them---the conclusion is most satisfying!

The story of a young woman meeting a "retired" Sherlock Holmes out in the country and consequently becoming his apprentice in sleuthing. The story is starts a bit slowly, spending a bit too much time setting up the characters, but soon enough gets interesting when the first mystery is presented. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and banter. My only complaint is a section referring to Mary Russell's cultural background that seems to come out of nowhere and is written as if important, but adds little to the story or the character we already know.
