Lisette Brodey's "Crooked Moon" is a fascinating look at our echelons of society, and how people relate to them. This expertly woven tale takes the reader on a poignant journey involving two women, friends since childhood, who end up on opposite sides of the tracks. Estranged for over two decades, a death in the family reunites the pair. Though a work of fiction, I constantly felt as though I was reading a real story about real people. Ms. Brodey deftly uses point of view, and well written dialogue, to convey the vast differences between each character's station in life. The individuals portrayed are all deliciously flawed. We're allowed deep inside the hearts and minds of these troubled souls, the author's sophisticated talents allowing us to feel empathy for each character. I found "Crooked Moon" to be insightful, and thought provoking; I was truly moved at times, and laughed out loud at several points along the way. Ms. Brodey has managed to craft a work of dramatic fiction that rings so true, I often wondered if I was reading a biographical account of her own experiences. I can't say enough about this amazing author, and her lovely work. "Crooked Moon" is a must-read.
Laini Taylor's writing has made me realize that I haven't read a truly beautifully-written book in a very, very long time. She is an incredible writer, and I loved every single word of this book. It's not strictly a standalone, but that didn't matter so much to me. So much of the book's main plot is very similar to other books in the YA field (angel romance), but the writing is absolutely incredible and Taylor has still managed to make the book completely unique. My favorite book of 2011 (so far...). I would love to see this get a Printz honor/win, and I don't think it's a stretch since the writing really is just that good. Full review to come.
